Bhadli Village in Bhuj, Gujrat Receives UIA Sgoutas Prize Mention

Recognized for her efforts in post-earthquake rehabilitation and poverty alleviation through sustainable architecture (2008).

2008, renowned Indian architect Somaya Sampat received a mention from the UIA (International Union of Architects) Sgoutas Prize for her Bhuj Village Project, recognizing her contributions toward the alleviation of poverty through architecture. The Sgoutas Prize, established by the UIA, honors architects whose work significantly improves the lives of disadvantaged communities.

Brinda Somaya's Bhuj Village Project was a response to the devastation caused by the 2001 Gujarat earthquake, which left many rural communities in ruins. Her approach to rebuilding and rehabilitation focused on sustainable, community-driven solutions, incorporating vernacular materials, local craftsmanship, and climate-responsive design. The project not only restored homes but also revitalized public spaces, schools, and community infrastructure, ensuring long-term resilience and self-sufficiency for the affected population.

The recognition by the UIA underscored Somaya’s commitment to socially responsible architecture, demonstrating how thoughtful design can empower communities and foster sustainable development.
