Exhibition Design: A source of renewal of creative energy within a studio
The diversity of our work within the studio is one that we continue to nurture and build upon. It allows us as Architects and Designers to deep dive into multiple typologies, research and build, learn from the process and cross apply it into other project typologies in new and innovative ways.
Architecture requires time. As we continue to request for more and yet be given less time for the creative process. we set out to find parallel sources of revitalizing the creative mind. Exhibition Design Projects are a source that we find ourselves recharged and reinvigorated as they allow us to embrace the larger narrative through developing curation through research and history, while developing the design through technical know-how, cutting edge technology and innovative detailing. The typology allows for intense yet short periods of creative energy that are efficient and rejuvenating for the studio.
With access to yottabytes of data today, the sources and magnitude of knowledge available allow for voracious reading and assimilation. Information of factual, historic, cultural and technical accuracy layered with critical thinking and academic interpretations that also connect to parallel subjects that interweave with the subject matter. A pattern almost emerges from the data to reveal a path that forms the foundation of the narrative and design. It often feels like solving a sudoku puzzle – stimulating the cognitive skills within the methodical structure of the grid to reach the solution.
Exhibition Design is set in the world of knowledge and facts, of logic and structure and allows the mind to creatively emerge with solutions on a human scale. The spaces contain wonderous and intricate detail encouraging the curious mind to absorb and experience with all senses amongst objects, text, visuals and digital experiences. An empty room can have as powerful an impact as a room filled immersed with hundreds of objects or a visually immersive digital storytelling. The spatial tools to tell the narrative are many and new ways continue to be developed. Success lies in generating a reaction, that the spaces has allowed for discussion, interpretation, both positive and negative; that it leaves an image in the mind’s eye long after the person has left the space. As curators and exhibition designers, we greatly value the space and reiterate it’s importance in empowering us to think and design holistically as Architects.
