Artfully Sustainable

The artworks of Bharat Bhavan II were conceptualized and curated with sustainability at its core.

Architecture and sustainable artworks share a common goal of promoting environmental responsibility while creating spaces that inspire and enrich people's lives. The proposed artworks for BPCL were inspired by green refineries, the Green Earth campaign, fluidity and movement, an earthy color palette, circular forms, and textures that simulate the effects of geology and refineries.

Similarly, the artists selected for the project shared these goals. Therefore, the chosen artists were those who used non-toxic, sustainable materials in their art practices and integrated conceptual ideas of sustainability into their work.

Artists like Shantanu Dey worked with e-waste, personally selecting discarded materials from around the city and segregating them to create his art. He crafted cityscapes that reflected Mumbai's vibrancy while highlighting the environmental risks of electronic waste disposal.

For another artwork, he used waste wood as his primary material. The pieces selected were the ends of wood discarded during construction and furniture making. He created the artwork with the hope that it would raise awareness about the potential for upcycling waste wood.

Deepak Kumar incorporated repurposed wood from landfills into his artwork to promote recycling. The rate of wood recycling is much lower compared to concrete, which influenced his selection. He carefully collected doors and windows which were found from the demolition of old houses, aiming to preserve those memories.

Ravi Kumar used old and discarded magazine paper to address deforestation caused by the use of trees in paper production. He advocates for reducing paper consumption in his artwork, promoting the message, 'Think before you print.

By prioritizing diversity and geographic representation, the platform aimed to celebrate India's artistic heritage, fostering a more inclusive and equitable artistic ecosystem while raising awareness about sustainability and environmental issues.
